Preparing For Your Big Road Trip: What You Should Know

When you decide to go on a big, long road trip, there are many factors you need to consider. You need to decide where you are going, when you leave, your route, what to pack, and most importantly of all, you need to get your car ready for the long journey. While your car is probably running just fine as you go about your daily activities, a long road trip in which you will put a great deal of miles on your car in a short period of time requires additional maintenance. So, learn the important maintenance steps you will need to have performed before you leave on your road trip.

Take Care Of Your Wheels and Tires

Tire and wheel maintenance are very important when you plan to have your car on the road for prolonged periods of time. The first thing you will want to check is whether or not your tires are road worthy. Old tires with thin or no tread, or that are showing noticeable fraying and wear will need to be replaced before you head out on your trip. The last thing you want is to be stuck in the middle of nowhere after your bald tire blew out.

Additional tire and wheel care includes getting a wheel alignment, getting your tire pressure checked, and getting your tires balanced and rotated. You will also want to have your mechanic take a look at your spare tire and make sure it is ready to use just in case.

Get An Oil Change And Check Your Fluids

Even if you are not yet due for your next oil change, you are about to put a significant number of miles on your vehicle and you will quickly surpass the mileage for your next oil change if it has been a little while. So, before you head out, have your mechanic check and change your oil and filter.

Additionally, you should get all of your car's other fluids checked, including antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and transmission fluid. These checks and refills can save you a great deal of trouble out on the road.

Get Your Brakes Tested And Replaced

Your brakes need to be in top condition before a long road trip. So, when your car is in the shop, go ahead and ask your mechanic to take a look at your brakes and brake pads.

Make sure that if any issues are found with your braking system that they are taken care of before you head out on the open road. Driving with brakes that are worn down or unbalanced can cause any number of problems including accidents.

Now that you know what you need to do to get ready for your road trip, schedule an appointment with a mechanic like Alaska Chevron Service to have all of the necessary services completed. Then, you can head out on the road knowing your car is in the best possible condition for a long trip.
