Two Signs That It's Time To Have Your Brakes Serviced

After the engine, your brakes are one of the most important components of your car.  If you aren't experiencing major issues with stopping, you may think that your brakes are in good condition and don't require any attention.  However, overlooking some subtle clues of a brake problem could result in a dangerous accident.  Instead of waiting until a major brake malfunction occurs, use this information to learn more about the warning signs that you should take heed to.

Your Brakes Squeal

One of the most telling symptoms of a brake problem is a distinctive squealing sound that is emitted from your car when you press down on the brakes.  The noise is often an indication that your brake pads are so worn down that there is no cushion between the brakes and the rotors.  What you are hearing is metal on metal, and this needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Keep in mind that you'll want to note when the squealing occurs to gain a better idea of whether or not you have a problem.  If you only hear the sound when you initially start the car up for the day, it could simply be the moisture that has built up while the car was resting.  However, if the sound occurs repeatedly, even after the car is fully warmed up, you should take the vehicle to a trained professional who can diagnose and repair your brakes.

Your Brake Pedal Vibrates

Another sign of a brake issue deals with a vibrating sensation that happens when you press your brake pedal.  When your car has good brakes, you shouldn't feel any pulling or vibrations when you try to brake.  However, when the your brakes are worn, it takes more effort for your car to come to a complete stop, and the vibration reflects this additional strain.

It should be noted that if you regularly come to screeching halts after driving at top speeds, your brakes will typically vibrate because the rapid-fire motion that is required to stop after traveling so quickly.  However, if your brakes are working properly, they shouldn't do this on a consistent basis if you are driving normally and give yourself enough time to brake.

A large part of being a responsible motorist is paying attention to your car so you can stop minor issues before they become major problems.  If you notice these symptoms, have your brakes serviced right away so you can continue to drive safely.
